Par 3 #7 Water Problem is Solved! - 12/15/09

For most of the 2009 golf season, players at Pinehurst Golf Club would arrive at hole #7 excited for a short par 3.  The hole is played from an elevated tee, with the blues being 145 yards, white at 110 and red at 95.  The hole requires you to carry a pond, and when many would barely make it - SPLAT, their ball would still land in standing water from the pond overflowing it's bank.  Obviously, the frustration is understandable.

Well finally that problem should be solved for a long time, as the new drainage line that was attempted at mid-summer, is now completed and functioning properly.  This project required the drain tile to travel underneath two irrigation lines feeding the green sprinklers on #7.  This lets the pond drain before overflowing the bank.  It will take a good month of weather for the grass to come back in the area worked on, but it will be very pleasant to have the picturesque par 3 that graces the Pinehurst Golf Club scorecard back at its best.

12 Trees Fall in Early December Wind Storm - 12/11/09

Pinehurst Golf Club lost about a dozen trees last week during the high wind storm.  Trees on holes 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 came down.  The hardest hit area was behind the #3 green and to the back right of the #4 tee.  One large Locust tree fell on the #4 elevated tee, damaging the hitting area.  Also, a very large poplar fell right of the #9 fairway, about 50 yards short of the green.  Clean-up will begin as soon as possible.

In other course news, the new drainge has been installed across holes 5 and 6.  The drainage runs from the #6 vineyard across the #5 fairway towards the railroad tracks.  Installed were two 8" drainage lines, one solid and one perforated.  There was also one surface drain installed in a low area, and connected to the new underground system.  This would be considered phase one of 5 in what needs to be done.

Finally, the club house renovation is slowly coming along.  The new bathrooms, closet, office and walls are framed in.  Next, framing in the new bar and running electric and plumbing will be started.  The golf proshop, bar and restaurant will be ready for spring.

#3 Bridge Re-Opened 7/13/09

The bridge from #2 green to the #3 tee has finally been re-opened.  Upon arrival at Pinehurst in April, a Willow tree had fallen in the creek, created a dam and washed out the bridge.  After getting that Willow out of the creek and re-placing the bridge, the lightning storm on Saturday washed it out yet again.  We had only had it in place for about 36 hours...

Sunday we placed it again and tried another way of anchoring it to ensure it doesn't wash out again.  Finally, access to the permanent tee on #3 is set!  All tees, Blue, White Red and Gold are across the creek.  After teeing off and crossing the creek to the #3 fairway, proceed to the concrete bridge to play the hole.  Many say this is our signature hole, so we're happy to have it back to normal.

Driving Range Update - 7/13/09

The driving range is nearing completion.  We used a brush hog on it last week and followed that up with a mowing down to about 5".  That was followed by rolling the field.  We still need to pick over the entire range for grape plant roots and rocks.  When we can mow it with our 7-gang mower, it will be ready to use.  Currently we have 5 turf mats in place and ready to go as the grass quality at the teeing area won't be ready until fall at best.
